About Us

Alexander House in Cheltenham is a residential care home supporting older people, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people managing mental health conditions. We also offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period.

We support a genuinely mixed group of people, and the only way to do that well is to plan around individuals rather than around the home. A younger adult with a learning disability and an older resident want quite different things from a week, so we ask each person what matters to them, how they prefer to communicate and what they want to keep doing for themselves, and we build support from those answers rather than from a standard package.

Practically, that can mean help with personal care, medication and health appointments, or it can mean support to cook, manage money, get out locally and keep in touch with family and friends. People have their own room and their own belongings, and they decide how much they want to be involved in what is going on around them.

We work alongside families, advocates and health professionals, and we treat the person's own view as the one that carries the most weight.

Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what would make things better and we act on what they tell us rather than waiting for a formal review to prompt it.

More about the care at Alexander House Care Home - Cheltenham

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

Growing older often brings a slow shift in what people need help with, from prompts with medication in the morning to a hand with washing, dressing, continence care and simply having someone to sit and talk with during the day. Alexander House is registered to provide older person care in Cheltenham, and holds a good rating from the Care Quality Commission following its inspection in December 2019. Fees for older person care across the South West generally sit between £1000 and £1300 a week, while Gloucestershire County Council typically funds placements at around £750 to £900. Families looking round should ask how morning and evening routines are planned around the resident rather than the rota, how many staff are awake overnight, and how the home handles GP visits, falls and changes in health.

Learning Disability / Autism

Support for autistic adults and adults with a learning disability works best when it is built around the individual, covering communication preferences, sensory needs, familiar routines and the skills someone wants to keep or grow. Alexander House is registered for this group, and placements are usually commissioned by the local authority or integrated care board with regular reviews of the care and support plan. Ask how the home works with families, advocates and community teams, and how progress against personal goals is recorded.

Mental Health

Living well with an enduring mental health condition often rests on steady routines, familiar faces, dignity in daily life and quick recognition when things start to slip. Mental health support is part of what Alexander House is registered to provide. Useful questions include how staff are trained around specific diagnoses, how medication and appointments with community mental health teams are coordinated, and what the plan looks like if someone becomes unwell or reaches a point of crisis.

Respite Care

Planning a respite stay at Alexander House in Cheltenham usually means booking several weeks ahead, agreeing a minimum length of stay, and sharing a clear summary of medication, health needs and daily preferences. Pack comfortable clothing, toiletries, favourite items from home and any mobility or continence equipment already in use. Many families use a first short break as a gentle trial of the home before considering anything longer term.

Residential Care

Residential care covers help with daily life for people who do not need round the clock nursing input from a registered nurse. That usually means support with personal care, prompts and administration of medication, cooked meals, laundry, housekeeping and company through the day, alongside activities and time out in the local area. Where a nursing home is registered to meet ongoing clinical needs such as complex wound care, PEG feeding or unstable long term conditions, a residential setting like Alexander House draws on district nurses and GPs for that side of things. Prospective residents in Cheltenham can expect South West fees in the region of £1000 to £1300 a week privately, with Gloucestershire's funded rate closer to £750 to £900. It is worth asking how meals, choice of room and daily routines are shaped around each person.
