About Us
Queensmead Residential Home is in Polegate, supporting older people and younger adults from across East Sussex, including people who have a physical disability.
We are a residential home rather than a clinical setting, and we say so plainly because people deserve to know what they are choosing. What we provide is a household in which the practical difficulties of later life have been lifted off somebody's shoulders. Help with washing and dressing, given without fuss and in private. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here and eaten at a table. Somebody awake through the night. Company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not.
Where a physical disability is part of the picture, our attention goes to movement and independence. Accessible bathrooms, the right equipment, and staff who know how a particular person wants to be helped to transfer. Being left in a room because getting somebody out of it takes two people and ten minutes is the kind of small neglect that quietly shrinks a life, and we do not tolerate it.
Most people move in after a hard stretch, so we take the first weeks slowly and learn how a person likes their day arranged before we start arranging anything. Routines matter a great deal more than people expect.
The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and have a cup of tea with us and ask the residents what they make of the place.

More about the care at Queensmead Residential Home
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Downlands Medical Centre is 0.1 miles from Queensmead, with a pharmacy at 0.2 miles and a dentist a little further. Older residents are helped with washing and dressing, which the home says it does without fuss and in private, along with medication managed properly and meals cooked on the premises. It also says somebody is awake through the night, and that company is there when wanted and quiet when it is not. Most people move in after a hard stretch, so the home says it takes the first weeks slowly and learns how a person likes their day arranged. Ask how many staff are awake overnight and who checks that a routine is being kept to.
Physical Disability
Being left in a room because getting somebody out takes two people and ten minutes is what this home calls a small neglect that shrinks a life. For a physical disability that is the test, along with accessible bathrooms, the right equipment and staff who know how a person wants to be helped to transfer. Ask how transfers are staffed and whether an adapted bathroom can be seen on a visit.
Younger Adults
Polegate Station is 0.3 miles from Queensmead, and only two of the 47 homes in the area are newer to the register. In a house of 21 places an adult under 65 will have few contemporaries, which is the thing to weigh. Ask who else of a similar age is there, what the week offers, and how freely someone can come and go.
Residential Care
Queensmead holds 21 places, fewer than 40 of the 47 homes in the area and well below a local average of 45. The home is direct about being residential rather than clinical, which is the distinction that matters most when choosing. Residential care covers everyday living, personal care, medication, cooked meals and company, but there is no registered nurse on site, so somebody needing regular clinical attention would need a nursing home. South East weekly fees usually fall between £1100 and £1450, while East Sussex council pays about £800 to £950. Ask what is included in the fee at this Polegate home and what is charged separately.
