About Us

Caroline House is a residential care home in Hailsham, East Sussex. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and respite stays are part of what we do.

We let residents set the pace. Late risers rise late, meals stretch across the morning, and an empty afternoon is a legitimate choice rather than a gap to fill.

Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information is much harder to gather later and it is what still connects when a good deal else has gone.

Food gets more thought than people expect. Appetite is often the first thing to go, and a meal that arrives cold, or at a time nobody is hungry, or needing help that has not come, quietly becomes a meal not eaten.

When somebody is nearing the end of their life we try to get the small things right: familiar faces, a quiet room, family made welcome at any hour, and no unnecessary fuss.

The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives who visit often notice what we have stopped seeing, and we would rather they told us plainly.
