About Us
Oak House is a residential care home in Axminster supporting older people, including many living with dementia, and some younger adults. We also welcome respite guests.
We want the home to feel like a house rather than a facility. Mornings are flexible, meals are proper meals, and residents choose how they spend their days. Staff take time to learn what someone actually enjoys, which is usually more particular than any general activities programme would suggest.
Dementia care takes up a good part of our attention. We keep routines familiar, the building calm and the staffing consistent, and we go with the person rather than correcting them. When a resident becomes distressed we look for the cause, since distress almost always has one, and families often know exactly what settles someone and what does not. We would much rather ask them.
For younger residents we make sure the day contains something that belongs to their own generation rather than expecting everyone to live the same afternoon.
Respite stays are available and give family carers a genuine break, with the person staying receiving exactly what a permanent resident receives.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good.
