About The Next Step Trust-Respite
We are a respite house in Halifax supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people with physical disabilities or sight and hearing loss. Short breaks are what we do, and we think they deserve to be done properly rather than treated as a stopgap. A stay here should be something the person looks forward to, not something endured so that a family carer can rest. So we get to know somebody before they first come, we find out what their days normally look like, what they enjoy, what unsettles them and how they communicate, and we make sure the same information is there every time they visit rather than starting again each stay. Routines that matter are kept exactly as they are at home. Where speech is difficult we use the signs, pictures or objects a person already trusts. People choose how they spend their time here, whether that means getting out and about in the town or keeping things quiet and familiar. For families, a break only works if it is genuinely restful, which means trusting the people looking after your relative. We would rather you rang us during a stay than sat at home wondering, and we are happy to go over arrangements in as much detail as you want beforehand. Please get in touch if you would like to visit and see how the house works.
