About Otto Schiff
Otto Schiff is a residential care home in Barnet. We are home to older people who need support with daily life, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people recovering from illness or giving a family carer a break. Moving into a home usually follows a difficult stretch, so we take the settling in slowly. We ask about the routines of a lifetime, the food somebody actually likes, how they take their tea and whether they would rather be up early or have a lie in, and we build around that rather than expecting people to adapt to us. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and we knock before we come in. The days here are not heavily organised. Some residents want company, conversation, music and a walk out. Others want the newspaper and their own company. Both are entirely reasonable. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work, so we keep our team settled and learn each person's history properly rather than just their care needs. When somebody is distressed we look for the reason behind it instead of trying to close it down. We work with local GPs and community nurses so health changes are picked up early, and families are kept properly informed, including when the news is difficult. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time.
