Choosing Between the Nursing Homes in Farnborough
What the ratings do and do not tell you
Knellwood, Lavender Lodge Care Home and Fernhill Neurological Centre-Inspire Neurocare (Farnborough) Limited all hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, so the shortlist starts on firm ground. A shared rating does not mean three similar homes, though. One report may praise strong clinical leadership while another highlights activities or the way families are involved, and the sections an inspector singles out are often the ones that matter most to a particular person. Read each report alongside the other two and the differences between the three homes become much easier to see.
Checks worth making before you commit
Nursing registration means a qualified nurse is on duty at all hours, so ask how many nurses and carers cover each shift, how often agency staff are used and how long the current manager has been in post. Ask how the home handles pressure care, continence support, swallowing difficulties and medication reviews, and how quickly a general practitioner or district nurse attends. If a neurological condition or dementia is part of the picture, ask what specialist training the staff have completed. Visit more than once, including at a quieter time of day, and watch how people who need help with eating are supported.
Arranging an Assessment and Settling the Funding
The care needs assessment comes first
A nursing placement usually begins with an assessment of need, which is free to request and does not depend on income or savings. It records the help required with mobility, medication, nursing tasks and daily routine, and homes will ask to read it before they offer a bed. Contact London Borough of Southwark Adult Social Care to ask for that assessment and for the financial assessment that follows it, which establishes whether funded support applies. Where registered nursing is confirmed as necessary, the health service also pays a contribution towards the nursing part of the weekly fee, paid to the home directly.
Understanding the weekly fee
Nursing fees sit above residential fees because they cover nursing hours as well as the room, meals, laundry and personal care. Ask for the figure in writing, with a clear note of what falls outside it, how often it is reviewed and what happens if someone is admitted to hospital. Where capital is below the national threshold, the council may contribute after its financial assessment, and a deferred payment arrangement is sometimes possible where a property is involved. Agreeing these points early is far easier than revisiting them after a move.
