Comparing the Nursing Homes in Canterbury
Where the inspection records stand
The six homes gathered on this page do not sit at a common standard, and that is the first thing to take in. Three hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, namely The Red House Nursing Home, Highfield Care Home and Willow Tree Lodge. Two more, Lark View Care Home and Harbledown Lodge, are rated Requires Improvement, while Chaucer House has been rated Inadequate. Where a home has been judged Inadequate, the published report sets out what inspectors found and what the provider was told to put right, and reading it in full matters more than any summary of it.
Questions that are specific to nursing care
Because a qualified nurse must be on duty at all hours in a registered nursing home, ask how many nurses cover each shift, how the home manages when a post is vacant and how much agency cover it relies on. Ask how it handles pressure care, continence support, swallowing difficulties and medication reviews, and how quickly a general practitioner or district nurse attends when someone deteriorates. If dementia is part of the picture, ask how the home supports distress in the evening and overnight. Watching a mealtime, if you are offered the chance, tells you more about the care of people who need help to eat than any brochure will.
Assessments, Funded Support and Weekly Fees in Canterbury
Getting the assessment under way
A nursing placement normally rests on two pieces of paperwork, an assessment of need and a financial assessment, and the first of them is free to anyone who asks. You can ask Kent County Council Adult Social Care for a care needs assessment, which records the help required with mobility, medication, nursing tasks and daily routines, and which homes will want to read before they offer a room. Where the need for registered nursing is confirmed, the health service also pays a contribution towards the nursing element of the weekly fee, paid directly to the home rather than to the family.
What the weekly fee covers
Nursing fees are quoted weekly and are usually higher than residential fees, because they pay for nursing hours as well as the room, meals, laundry and personal care. Ask for the fee in writing, with a note of what sits outside it, how often it rises and what happens during a hospital admission or if private funds fall away. Where capital is below the national threshold, the council may contribute after its financial assessment, and a deferred payment arrangement can sometimes be used where a property is involved. Settle these questions before signing, because they are far harder to reopen once a move has taken place.
