About Ashlea Lodge

Ashlea Lodge is a nursing home in Sunderland. We support older people and younger adults whose needs include nursing care, and many of those living here are living with dementia. We also offer respite stays. Having registered nurses as part of the team means people with complex health needs can stay with us as those needs change rather than being moved on again. Families who have already been through one difficult move usually understand the value of that straight away. We work at keeping the nursing from setting the tone of the place. A nursing home can drift into feeling like a ward, and once that happens the rest follows: people stop being asked what they want, days lose any shape of their own, and relatives start behaving like hospital visitors. So we keep our attention on ordinary things. Meals worth eating. Getting outside when the weather allows. Help without a long wait. Privacy. Being spoken to as somebody with a working life and a family. For residents living with dementia we protect routine, keep the surroundings familiar, and ask relatives for the history that lets us understand what somebody means rather than only what they said. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If something goes wrong we would far rather hear it from a relative than read it somewhere later.
