About West Abbey
West Abbey is a nursing home in Yeovil. We care for older people and younger adults with nursing needs, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite and short stays. Qualified nurses are on duty at all hours, which means complex health needs, medication, wound and continence care and care at the end of life are managed here rather than requiring a move elsewhere. It also means that when a resident starts to become unwell, the people who notice are the ones who know them. Nursing is the foundation rather than the point of the place. Our residents live here, and what makes a day a good one is usually ordinary. A proper breakfast, the newspaper, familiar music, the garden when the weather allows, and staff with time to sit down and talk about something other than care. For residents living with dementia we keep the day steady and unhurried and we learn what reassures a particular person. For those with physical disabilities we pay attention to equipment, transfers and how the building is arranged, so that independence is kept wherever it can be. Where somebody is nearing the end of life we plan openly with them and their family, keep them comfortable and make room for relatives to stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome through the day, and you are welcome to come without arranging it first.
