About Us
Abbey Wood Court is a nursing home in Retford. We care for older people and younger adults who need nursing support, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss. Registered nurses are on site at all times.
Much of what we do is about noticing. The difference between a good nursing home and a poor one rarely shows up in a policy folder; it shows up in whether someone's skin is checked properly, whether a change in appetite is followed up, whether pain is recognised in a person who cannot describe it. We put our effort there, and we keep staffing at a level that makes that kind of attention possible.
For people living with dementia we work with familiarity rather than correction. Life histories are not a form we complete on admission, they are how we plan someone's day. For people with sensory loss we adapt the way we approach and communicate, so that care never arrives without warning.
Family and friends are part of this. Visiting is not confined to set hours, and relatives who have been doing the caring themselves are usually the best source of information we have.
We take respite bookings as well as longer stays.
The Care Quality Commission has not yet issued us an overall rating.
