About The Willows Nursing home

The Willows Nursing Home is in Weston super Mare in North Somerset. We care for adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults who also need nursing support, and we offer respite stays. Combining nursing care with support for people with learning disabilities is a particular kind of work, and it is often done badly. The risk is that the clinical side takes over and the person disappears behind their health needs. We work deliberately against that. Nursing here exists so that somebody can live a full life despite a complicated health picture, not so that their life becomes a treatment plan. In practice that means qualified nurses on site managing wounds, pain, continence, nutrition, medication and safe movement, while the rest of the day belongs to the people living here. Rooms are theirs to arrange. What we eat is decided by the people eating it. Where anybody goes at the weekend is their own choice. Understanding how each person communicates is central to all of it, particularly where speech is not the main route and where a health need can be easy to miss. We learn each person's way properly, write it down so that everybody responds identically, and keep checking we have understood rather than assuming. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.
