About House Care Home

Tonbridge House Care Home is a nursing home in Tonbridge. We care for older people who need nursing support, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Having registered nurses on site around the clock means clinical needs are met in the home rather than through repeated trips to hospital. Wound care, catheters, diabetes, pain relief and the gradual changes that come with frailty are managed by people who already know the person, in surroundings they know. Families can ring and speak to somebody who can actually tell them how their relative has been that day. Most of good nursing care is small things done reliably and on time. Pressure care that does not slip. Mouth care that is not skipped. Someone sitting with a person who is frightened at three in the morning. We would rather be judged on those than on anything we could put in a brochure. The other half of the job is a life worth getting up for. Residents choose their routines, their rooms are their own, and nobody joins in with anything out of politeness. With dementia we keep the surroundings calm and familiar and treat distress as something with a cause. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Tonbridge House.

What the inspectors found

A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Tonbridge House Care Home. Report published 29 November 2018.

  • 17 October 2018
  • 63 places, 24 people were using the service at the time
  • First assessment of the service

Safe

People and relatives told inspectors they had no concerns about safety. Risks to people were assessed individually, and there were enough suitably trained and safely recruited staff. Medicines were stored and given safely. One liquid medicine had an incorrect expiry date recorded and was given after it should have been discarded. The registered manager took immediate action, and the pharmacy advised there would be no adverse effect to the person.

Effective

Inspectors found that people had assessments covering all their needs and their rights to equality. Staff had the right induction, training and ongoing support. People were supported to eat and drink enough, a dietician was involved, and people accessed the healthcare they needed.

Caring

Inspectors found that staff knew people well and spoke with them in a respectful manner. People's privacy and dignity were respected, and their independence was promoted. Relatives said they could visit whenever they wanted and were made to feel welcome.

Responsive

Care plans were person centred, reviewed regularly and updated when needs changed. Some care plans were still being developed because the home was new and some people had only been there for a short time. People were supported to take part in activities they liked, and complaints were recorded, monitored and managed.

Well-led

Relatives told inspectors they thought the home was well managed. Inspectors found that the registered manager and provider promoted a positive, person centred and professional culture and had good oversight of quality and safety. Audits were completed and used to produce action plans, and staff said they were supported by the management team.

What people told the inspectors

People and relatives told inspectors they had no concerns about their safety and could speak to the registered manager if they did. Relatives said they could visit whenever they wanted and thought the home was well managed.
