About The Lawns Care Home

The Lawns Care Home is in Tavistock, Devon. We are registered for nursing care and we support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults whose health needs require a nurse rather than a residential setting. We also take respite admissions. That combination is not common, and it is the reason families find us. People with a learning disability who also have serious health needs are too often shuttled between places that can manage one half of the picture but not both. Here the nursing is already in the building, which means somebody does not have to leave the people they know in order to get the care they need. Doing this well means refusing to let the clinical side take over the person. Somebody who needs a nurse still has preferences about food, music, clothes and company, and still deserves to be asked rather than told. We explain before we act, we slow down, and we check that we have been understood rather than assuming. Support plans are written so the person has a chance of reading them. Tavistock sits on the edge of Dartmoor and we get people out into it when we can, which is not a nicety but a large part of what makes a week worth having. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and visit and meet the people who live here.
