About Highfield House

Highfield House is a nursing home in Whitehaven, Cumberland. We care for older people and younger adults who need qualified nursing alongside everyday support, and a great deal of our work is with residents living with dementia. Respite stays are available too. Registered nurses are on site around the clock, so medication, wound and pressure care and changing health needs are managed here and a resident does not have to move on each time their condition alters. Families often tell us that this continuity was the thing worrying them most. The danger in any nursing home is that clinical work gradually crowds out ordinary living, and we watch for it deliberately. Getting up at your own hour, eating something you actually want, keeping your own belongings around you and having someone sit down beside you rather than stand over you are not extras to be fitted in when there is time. For residents living with dementia we keep the daily rhythm steady and the staffing familiar, and we ask families for the life history that helps us reach the person. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.
