About The Belvedere
The Belvedere is a nursing home in Alderley Edge, providing nursing care for older people and younger adults across Cheshire East, including many people living with dementia. Having qualified nurses on site at all hours is what allows us to look after people whose health needs are substantial and liable to change. Medication, wound care, careful attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and the close monitoring that catches deterioration early are the ordinary content of our days rather than exceptional events. For families worn down by a run of hospital admissions, the end of that cycle is usually the first change they notice. Dementia nursing is a large part of what we do. People living with advanced dementia are often assumed to have stopped noticing, and in our experience that is simply wrong. Tone of voice registers. Being rushed registers. A familiar face registers. So we protect continuity of staffing, we talk to people rather than about them, and we take the time to learn what soothes a particular person when they are frightened, because it is rarely the same thing twice. Families often carry a good deal of guilt about this stage, and part of our job is making the home somewhere they want to be rather than somewhere they visit out of duty. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Visit at a busy time and ask the nurses how the hard nights are handled.

More about the care at The Belvedere
Nursing Care at The Belvedere
The ordinary content of a day here includes medication, wound care and careful attention to nutrition, pain and skin, which is what a nursing registration permits. Qualified nurses on site at all hours also mean monitoring close enough to catch deterioration before it turns into an emergency. That suits people whose health is substantial and liable to change, rather than those whose needs are mainly practical. Where a resident is assessed as needing nursing, the NHS pays about £235 a week towards that element through NHS Funded Nursing Care. Ask whether that assessment has been made, and what the family would be left paying each week.
Dementia Care at The Belvedere
Continuity of staffing is what this home says follows from taking dementia seriously, and it is the easiest thing to test on a visit. Its argument is that people with advanced dementia are wrongly assumed to have stopped noticing, since tone of voice and being rushed both register. Good dementia care adds a routine that holds and room to walk about without being turned back at every door. Because the registration is for nursing, care can usually continue at The Belvedere as the illness advances. Ask how a frightened resident is settled in the evening. Ask what the last stages would look like in this building.
Older Person Care at The Belvedere
Forty one residents is the limit at The Belvedere, and older person care is the first category on its registration. The day to day of that is help with washing and dressing, medication given properly, meals, and company that does not depend on a relative visiting. The home says it talks to people rather than about them, which sounds slight and is not: it is the difference between being a resident and being a case. Nothing published describes the night shift in Alderley Edge. Ask how many staff are on duty overnight and how many of those hold a nursing qualification. Ask who telephones a relative when a resident becomes unwell.
Younger Adults at The Belvedere
In Alderley Edge, as elsewhere in Cheshire East, the council usually pays about £800 to £980 a week against local fees of £1000 to £1300. For an adult under sixty five there is a second question, which is whether the week holds anything they would have chosen. Ask what a younger resident does with their days, and whether anyone near their age is living here now.
