About Us
Avenues East is a home care agency based in Stowmarket, supporting people in their own homes across this part of Suffolk. We work with adults who have a learning disability, with autistic people, with younger adults and with older people.
Our starting point is that the people we support are running their own lives and we are there to make that practical. For many that means a home of their own, choices about food, money and company, and the ordinary rights of any adult. The support behind it might be help with personal care, cooking, managing bills, getting to appointments, dealing with officialdom, or simply being there while somebody does something for the first time.
We try to do as little as necessary. Support that takes over is easier to deliver and much worse for the person, so we measure ourselves partly by what people have stopped needing us for.
Communication is where we concentrate. Some of the people we support do not use speech, and almost every serious problem we are asked to put right began with somebody not being properly listened to. We take the time, we use whatever method works for the person, and we check we have understood rather than assuming.
Rural Suffolk means distance and isolation are real risks, so getting out and keeping connections alive is treated as part of the job.
