We support younger adults in their own homes in Taunton and across Somerset. We have kept our focus deliberately narrow and would rather say so plainly than present ourselves as able to do everything. Supporting younger adults well asks for something specific, and the commonest mistake in this field is treating a person in their twenties or thirties as though their life were now their care. So we start from what somebody wants their week to contain rather than from a list of tasks. There are usually plans, friendships, ambitions and opinions, and our job is to make those possible rather than to manage around them. Where a person wants work, study, a social life or their own place, that is the purpose of the support. That also means stepping back as somebody becomes more able. A service whose own role never shrinks has stopped doing this properly, so we plan for that from the beginning and review it honestly. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are pleased with it and conscious it describes a period rather than a promise, so we keep asking the people we support what to change.
