Before any visits start we sit down with the person, and their family if they would like that, and agree what help is genuinely wanted, at what times and in what way. That becomes a written plan in plain language which our carers follow and which we change when circumstances change rather than leaving it filed away. Visits can cover personal care, help with medication, preparing meals, household tasks, shopping, getting to appointments and simply spending time with someone. For people with a learning disability or autism we adapt how we communicate to suit the individual and focus on supporting independence rather than taking over. We keep the team around each person small, because a familiar carer at a predictable hour is worth far more than an efficient rota, and because carers who know someone notice when things are different.
