About Borough of Reablement Service

We are the reablement team for the London Borough of Ealing, and we work with older people and younger adults in their own homes for a short period after something has changed. Most people come to us after a hospital stay, a fall, an illness or an operation. Our purpose is a little different from ordinary home care, and it is worth being clear about it. We are not here to take tasks over permanently. We are here to help somebody get back to doing as much as they can for themselves, which sometimes means standing back and letting a job take twenty minutes when we could have done it in five. That is not us being unhelpful. Ability that is taken away during a recovery is very hard to win back afterwards, and our job is to protect it. In practice that means working on getting washed and dressed, moving safely about the house, preparing food, managing medication and getting confident on the stairs or out of the front door again. We work alongside therapists, district nurses and GPs, and we are honest with people about what progress looks like and how long it may take. At the end of our time with somebody we say plainly what we think is still needed, whether that is nothing at all, a piece of equipment, or ongoing care. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection.
