About Mencap

We provide support in people's own homes and communities in Barnet. We work with adults who have a learning disability, with autistic adults and with younger adults building independence at home. Our starting point is that support should make somebody's own life possible rather than take it over. For some people that means help with personal care and daily routines. For others it means practical assistance with cooking, shopping, budgeting, correspondence and appointments. For others again it means somebody alongside them at college, at work, at a club or simply getting out into the borough and keeping up with friends. If somebody can do part of a task, they do that part. If they want to learn to do more, we help them learn, at their own pace and without making a production of it. Decisions about how, when and by whom support is given belong to the person receiving it. For the autistic people we support, clear communication and advance notice of change are central, and we take time to understand sensory needs and preferred ways of receiving information.
