Care Homes in Reading
The care homes in Reading listed on this page are what a family is generally weighing against one more attempt at managing with visits, adapted equipment and goodwill. Twenty five providers match the search, each registered for residential care rather than nursing, which covers accommodation, meals and support with washing, dressing and medication from staff who are present day and night. Two hold an Outstanding rating, fifteen are rated Good and seven are rated Requires Improvement, while one has not yet been given a published rating. Reading Borough Council is the authority that carries out a care needs assessment and, once a financial assessment has followed, decides what funded support a person is entitled to towards the weekly fee. That assessment costs nothing to request. Read the Care Quality Commission report attached to each profile below before you shortlist anywhere, since on a list with this spread the findings matter more than the labels.
What Residential Care in Reading Involves and What to Look For
A place in a residential home buys accommodation, meals, laundry and help with everyday personal care from staff who are on duty at all hours. It stops short of care from a registered nurse, which is the line separating these twenty five homes from a nursing placement and the first thing to establish.
Matching the home to the need
Be specific about what help is required now and what is likely within a year, from mobility and continence to appetite, night time confusion and medication. Homes differ in the specialisms they hold registration for, particularly dementia, so ask rather than assume. Ask as well what happens if needs outgrow residential care, because planning for that now can prevent an unwanted second move.
Using the inspection reports
St Lukes and The Oaks Care Home and Peppard House hold the two Outstanding ratings on this list. Fifteen homes are rated Good, seven are rated Requires Improvement and one is not yet rated. Where a home has been marked down, open the report and see which of the five key questions fell short and when the inspection took place, since a finding about medicines sits very differently from a finding about paperwork.
What a visit reveals
Arrive when the home is busy rather than at a quiet hour. Watch how staff speak to residents who are not expecting a visitor, whether people are occupied and how quickly call bells are answered. Ask how many carers work overnight, how much agency cover is used and how long the manager has been in post. Ask to see a room that is actually available rather than a show room, and stay for a meal if you can.
Getting an Assessment and Funding Care in Reading
Requesting a care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support has a right to an assessment, and a relative, a GP or a hospital discharge team can ask for one on their behalf. It is free and does not depend on savings. Reading Borough Council social care team carries out that assessment and the financial assessment that follows, the second of which sets out how much of the fee the council meets and how much the resident contributes.
Paying for a place
Where the council funds a placement it pays up to a set weekly rate, and a family choosing a more expensive home may be asked to meet the difference. Fees vary between providers, so request a written schedule showing what is included and what is charged as an extra, such as hairdressing, chiropody or escorted appointments. Ask how often fees are reviewed and what notice precedes an increase.
Timing the move
Homes with a strong reputation fill up, so start looking as soon as residential care seems likely. Visiting twice and comparing notes is worth more than one long tour, and a trial stay, where it is offered, tells you more than any brochure can.
