Choosing a care home in Eastleigh and what to look for
Eleven homes is a short enough list to consider in full, and the first cut should be practical rather than a matter of first impressions. Start with what the assessment says is needed, because a home unable to provide that support will not suit for long however welcoming it feels on the day. Then weigh distance, since relatives who can call in for twenty minutes on the way home visit far more often than those facing a long drive, and frequent short visits do more good than occasional long ones.
Size, routine and the feel of a place
A small home where the same few staff are on duty each week and everyone eats together suits some people well, while others prefer a larger building with more residents, more activity and more staff on each shift. Ask what an ordinary weekday looks like, who arranges activities and whether residents can keep the routines they had at home, particularly around getting up, meals and bedtime. Ask as well how the home helps someone through the first fortnight, which is usually the hardest stretch of any move.
Reading the inspection record
Nine homes here are rated Good, and those holding it include Sunnybank House, Brendoncare Knightwood, Stoke Knoll Rest Home and Orchard Gardens. Two homes require improvement, and in those cases the report matters far more than the label, because it sets out exactly what inspectors found and what the provider was asked to put right, which may be administrative or may be serious. Check the date of each inspection as well as its outcome, since a report published several years ago may describe a home that has changed manager or owner since.
Arranging care and working out who pays
An assessment is worth requesting even when a family expects to fund the placement itself, because the written outcome describes the support needed and homes take that document seriously when considering an admission.
The care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support can ask for an assessment, and there is no charge whatever someone owns or earns. It covers washing, dressing, mobility, medication, nutrition and how safely someone manages alone. Hampshire County Council completes that assessment and the separate financial assessment that establishes who pays. If you provide care day to day, ask for a carer's assessment at the same time, because your own needs are weighed independently of the person you look after.
Fees and what sits outside them
Residential fees are quoted weekly and cover the room, meals, laundry and personal care, with the figure reflecting the level of support needed and the room itself. Where the financial assessment shows that funded support applies, the council may meet part or all of the cost, and above the national threshold fees are paid privately. Ask for the weekly rate in writing and ask what is billed separately, since hairdressing, chiropody, outings and transport to appointments are usually charged on top. Ask how often fees are reviewed as well, because an annual increase is normal.
