Care Homes in Rutland
Collected on this page are eight care homes in Rutland, each of them a residential setting offering a permanent room, meals and help with personal care rather than the clinical support a nursing home would provide. Five hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and three have been told that they Require Improvement, which is a more uneven picture than many areas show and one that repays proper reading. Rutland County Council is the authority responsible for carrying out a care needs assessment, for agreeing what level of support is required and for contributing towards weekly fees where a financial assessment shows that someone qualifies. A home that has been marked down is not automatically one to avoid, though the reasons behind the judgement need looking at before any decision is taken. Open the profiles below, read what inspectors found and what each provider has changed since, then choose which homes to visit.
Arranging and Funding Residential Care in Rutland
The care needs assessment
An assessment establishes what level of support is genuinely required and what should be funded, so it belongs ahead of any tour of homes. Rutland County Council Adult Social Care carries it out and decides what funded support follows from it. The assessment is free, it is not means tested, and a relative, friend or advocate may request one where the person cannot. The assessor looks at mobility, medication, memory, nutrition and the help needed each day before writing the support plan.
Contributions and means testing
Capital and income are examined next to fix the weekly payment. Where savings exceed the national upper capital limit the placement is normally funded privately, and where they fall below it the authority contributes towards an agreed rate. Property is treated differently depending on circumstances, and a deferred payment arrangement can sometimes bridge the gap while a house is sold. Where a health condition is the main reason care is needed, ask about NHS continuing healthcare.
What drives the weekly figure
Fees reflect room size, the level of help required and how a home staffs its shifts. Ask for the figure in writing for the actual room on offer, together with anything billed separately, the notice period and how often rates are reviewed.
Choosing the Right Care Home in Rutland
Where the judgements sit
Aspen Manor Care Home, Rutland House Community Trust, Manton Hall, Wisteria House Residential Home and Chater Lodge hold Good ratings. Aberdeen House, Crown House Care Home and The Lodge currently require improvement. In those cases, read which of the five key areas was criticised, how recent the inspection was and what the provider has done since. A finding about record keeping is a different matter from one about safety.
Questions that draw out the difference
Ask how many staff are on duty by day and overnight, how the home covers sickness and how long the manager has been in post. Ask how relatives are told about a fall or a change in health and who telephones them. Where a particular condition is involved, ask what experience the team has of it.
Making the visit count
Visit at a busy hour rather than a quiet one, and go twice where the decision is close. Notice whether residents look occupied, whether call bells are answered without irritation and whether staff use people's names in passing. Compare what you saw with what the report described, and raise any discrepancy directly with the manager.
