About 18 Boundary Road
18 Boundary Road is a small residential care home in Chippenham, Wiltshire. The people we support are adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, ranging from younger adults to older residents. Living somewhere small has real advantages. Residents are known as individuals rather than as a set of needs, the staff team is consistent, and the household can be organised around the people in it. Those who live here are involved in the running of the place, in what is bought and cooked, and in how their own time is spent inside and outside the house. We begin by learning how each person communicates and likes to be communicated with, which for some residents involves little or no speech, and we adapt ourselves rather than expecting adaptation. For autistic residents, a predictable environment and attention to sensory comfort are central, and changes are explained and prepared for rather than imposed. We try to grow independence instead of quietly eroding it. In practice that means supporting someone through tasks they could learn to manage, from a meal to a bus journey to arranging to meet somebody, and resisting the temptation to do it for them because it would be quicker. We also respect the residents for whom a settled, unchanging routine is the right answer. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Families, advocates and professionals are welcome to get in touch or to visit.
