About Us
Here at Ostley House, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Barrow in Furness, and we take real pride in the community we have built together with our residents and their families.
We support people with a range of needs, including dementia care, care for those living with visual or hearing impairment, and short term respite care for those who need a temporary place to stay while they recover or while their usual carers take a well earned break. Whatever brings someone to us, our aim is always the same: to make sure they feel genuinely at home here.
Our team gets to know each resident as an individual. That means understanding not just their care needs, but their routines, their preferences, their histories and the things that matter most to them day to day. We believe good care is built on those kinds of relationships, and we work hard to maintain them.
We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of good, which reflects the consistent effort our staff put in every single day. We see that rating not as a finish line but as a prompt to keep asking ourselves how we can do things better.
Families are always welcome here. We know how much it means to feel reassured about a loved one, and we want relatives to feel as comfortable walking through our doors as our residents do. Open communication with families is something we genuinely value, not just something we say.
If you are considering Ostley House for yourself or someone close to you, we would love to show you around and answer any questions you might have. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.

More about the care at Ostley House
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
The daily rhythm of a care home is what an older resident actually lives with: when they wake, what they eat, who helps them wash and whether anyone sits down with them. Ostley House is registered for older person care. Medication management and help with mobility sit alongside those basics. Families should ask whether routines flex around the resident or the resident flexes around the rota. Night cover deserves a direct question, including staff numbers and response times to call bells. Weekly fees in the North West typically run from 800 to 1050 pounds, with the council paying around 650 to 800.
Dementia
Someone with dementia relies on a building being legible, with bedrooms easy to find and bathrooms where they are expected to be. Dementia care is one of the registrations held by Ostley House. Ask how the layout helps, how staff respond to distress or a resident wanting to go home, and how risk is balanced against freedom. Find out what dementia training staff receive and how often it is refreshed. Establish how the home works with families as the illness advances and choices become harder. Consistency among staff tends to matter more than any single feature of the building.
Visual / Hearing Impairment
Poor lighting and cluttered corridors undo a great deal of good for residents with failing sight. Ostley House is registered for visual and hearing impairment. Ask how the home manages lighting and signage, who checks hearing aids and spectacles, and how staff are expected to introduce themselves.
Respite Care
Short term places can be hard to find at short notice, particularly after a hospital discharge. Ostley House is registered to provide respite. Ask how quickly a room can be made available, what the minimum stay is, and what the home needs to know about medication beforehand.
Residential Care
Help with everyday living, provided in a staffed building where no nurses are employed, is the simplest description of residential care. Ostley House in Barrow in Furness is registered to provide it. Meals, personal care, laundry, medicines and company are included, with district nurses visiting when clinical input is needed. Inspectors rated the home good in December 2018. Ask what the weekly fee covers, what activities run, and what would happen if a resident's needs outgrew what the home can provide. A weekday visit around lunchtime shows more than any brochure.
Questions families ask about Ostley House
Answered from the CQC register where we can. 5 of these the home has not told us yet, so ask when you call.
Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?
Yes. Ostley House is registered for dementia care, so someone whose needs increase can usually stay rather than move. Ask how they support people in the later stages. Source: CQC register
Is there a nurse on site if health needs change?
No. Ostley House is a residential care home without on-site nursing. District nurses and GPs visit, but someone who needs daily nursing may have to move to a nursing home. Source: CQC register

Will they support end of life care, so there is no move at the hardest time?
Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.
Can she bring her cat or dog?
Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.
Can a couple stay together?
Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.
Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?
Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.
Do they take younger adults as well as older people?
No. Ostley House is registered for older people. Younger adults are not listed. Source: CQC register
Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?
Ask the home. Every home should welcome a visit. Call to arrange one, ideally at a mealtime or during an activity, and ask about visiting hours for family.
