About Watson House
Watson House is a residential care home in Reading, in West Berkshire, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults, alongside older people. We also offer respite stays. This is somewhere people live rather than somewhere people are placed. People choose how their own rooms look, join in with shopping, cooking and keeping the house going as much as they want to and are able to, and get out to what they enjoy in and around Reading. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a regular club, we build the support around making that happen rather than treating it as a bonus. Doing this well comes down to detail and consistency. Knowing what noise, crowding or a sudden change of plan does to a particular person. Giving warning well in advance. Communicating in whatever way genuinely reaches somebody, whether that is speech, symbols, writing or simply unhurried time. We keep the staff team steady because familiarity matters more here than technique, and we train people to spot what causes distress and to prevent it rather than manage it after the fact. We work closely with families, social workers and health colleagues and expect to be challenged when we get something wrong. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Visitors and referrers are welcome to come and see the house.
