About Us
Here at The Village Care Home in Sunderland, we provide residential care for older adults in a warm and welcoming environment where people genuinely feel at home. We support individuals living with dementia, mental health conditions and physical disabilities, and we also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay while their regular carer takes a break or during a period of recovery.
We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone walks through our door, whether as a potential resident, a family member or a visiting professional, we want them to feel comfortable and reassured. Our team takes time to get to know each person as an individual, understanding their routines, their preferences and what matters most to them in daily life.
Our approach to dementia care is person centred, meaning we focus on the individual rather than the condition. We work hard to maintain familiarity and routine, which can make a real difference to someone living with memory loss. For those with physical disabilities or mental health needs, we tailor our support so that each resident retains as much independence as possible while receiving the level of care they actually need.
We are proud that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which reflects the effort our whole team puts in every day. We do not rest on that, though. We are always looking at how we can do things better and listening to residents and their families to make sure we are getting things right.
If you would like to find out more about life at The Village Care Home or arrange a visit, we would love to hear from you.

More about the care at The Village Care Home
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Warmth is hard to assess from a website, which is why a visit tells you more than any amount of reading. The Village Care Home is registered for older person care, covering personal care, medication and daily routines. What to look for is choice, since that distinguishes a home run for residents from one run for staff convenience. Ask whether people decide when to get up and eat, and how personal care is handled discreetly. Ask how many staff are awake overnight and how quickly bells are answered. Sunderland usually pays between £620 and £760 a week, so ask how any difference from the fee is covered.
Dementia
A quiet, predictable building suits dementia better than any amount of specialist equipment. The Village Care Home holds a dementia registration alongside residential care. Consistent staff, unhurried mealtimes and calm communal space carry most of the weight. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed or determined to leave. Ask how sedating medication is reviewed and who is consulted. Ask too whether somebody could stay as dementia advances.
Mental Health
Mental health in later life is too often treated as a behaviour problem rather than a condition. Mental health falls within the registration at The Village Care Home. Ask what training staff have, who is called when somebody becomes unwell, and how often medication is reviewed. Ask also how privacy and routine are protected on difficult days.
Physical Disability
Space to move a wheelchair and the right equipment in the right room decide how much independence remains. Physical disability is named in the registration at The Village Care Home. Hoists, profiling beds and pressure relief protect comfort as well as safety. Ask what the home holds, who assesses for it, and how transfers are staffed overnight.
Respite Care
Cover during a regular carer's break is one of the two reasons the home gives for its short stays, recovery being the other. Respite care is included in the registration at The Village Care Home. Pack familiar clothes, medication in its original packaging and a note of daily routines. Ask the minimum stay, the weekly rate and how far ahead busy periods fill.
Residential Care
Support with the everyday is what a residential registration covers, meaning meals, laundry, help with washing and company. The Village Care Home in Sunderland offers residential care for older adults, with dementia, mental health and physical disability also within its registration. Nursing care is a separate matter, as a residential home has no nurse on site and relies on visiting district nurses. Fees across the North East commonly run from £750 to £1000 a week, among the lowest in England. The good rating comes from an inspection in May 2019, now some years old. Ask what the fee includes and what has changed since inspectors last called.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?
Yes. The Village Care Home is registered for dementia care, so someone whose needs increase can usually stay rather than move. Ask how they support people in the later stages. Source: CQC register
Is there a nurse on site if health needs change?
No. The Village Care Home is a residential care home without on-site nursing. District nurses and GPs visit, but someone who needs daily nursing may have to move to a nursing home. Source: CQC register
Can they try a short stay before deciding?
Yes. The Village Care Home offers respite and short stays, which is a good way to see whether the home is the right fit. Source: CQC register
Will they support end of life care, so there is no move at the hardest time?
Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.
Can she bring her cat or dog?
Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.
Can a couple stay together?
Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.
Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?
Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.
Do they take younger adults as well as older people?
No. The Village Care Home is registered for older people. Younger adults are not listed. Source: CQC register
Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?
Ask the home. Every home should welcome a visit. Call to arrange one, ideally at a mealtime or during an activity, and ask about visiting hours for family.
