About Us

Wilnecote Rest Home is a residential care home in Tamworth, Staffordshire. We provide accommodation and personal care, and a good part of our work is supporting people who are living with dementia. We also welcome people for respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to help someone regain confidence after a difficult spell.

Dementia care rewards patience more than anything else. We keep the shape of the day familiar, we let people take their time rather than hurrying them along, and when somebody becomes unsettled we look for the reason instead of treating it as behaviour to be handled. Families usually hold the detail that makes sense of it, so we ask them, and we write down what they tell us.

Nobody moves in without us getting to know them first. We want to understand the routine a person is used to, what they enjoy at mealtimes, when they like to rise and go to bed, and what they would still like to do for themselves. Their care plan follows from that rather than from a standard list, and we revisit it as things change.

Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we treat it as the standard we must keep meeting.

Visitors are welcome. If you would like to look around Wilnecote, please get in touch.

More about the care at Wilnecote Rest Home

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Dementia

Living with dementia is easier when the day has a shape a person recognises, when staff have time to sit with distress rather than shut it down, and when the building itself is calm and easy to navigate. Wilnecote Rest Home in Tamworth is registered to provide dementia care alongside its residential service, and holds a good rating from the Care Quality Commission following inspection in April 2019. Worthwhile questions to put to the home include how they respond when a resident becomes agitated or tries to leave, how they involve relatives in building up a life history, and how the care plan is adjusted as memory, mobility and communication change over the months and years. Ask too how they support families through the harder stages.

Respite Care

Booking a respite stay usually means giving the home notice, agreeing a minimum length of one or two weeks, and sending in a GP summary along with current medication. Pack familiar clothes, toiletries, glasses, hearing aids and a few personal items that help the room feel settled. Wilnecote Rest Home is registered for respite, and such a stay can also work as a trial run before any decision about moving in permanently.

Residential Care

Choosing a residential care home in Tamworth usually comes down to whether someone needs help with the ordinary parts of the day rather than clinical nursing. Wilnecote Rest Home is registered for residential care, which covers accommodation, meals, help with washing and dressing, prompts with medication and the social side of living alongside others. A nursing home, by contrast, has registered nurses on site around the clock for wounds, complex medication regimes or conditions that need constant clinical oversight. Weekly fees across the West Midlands tend to fall between about £850 and £1150, while Staffordshire County Council typically funds placements at roughly £680 to £820 a week, so it is worth asking how any gap would be covered. Prospective families may also want to ask what a normal day looks like and how activities are chosen.

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?

Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.

Do they take younger adults as well as older people?

Ask the home. The register does not say which age groups the home supports. Ask the home.
