About Us
The Old Police House in Frome is a small residential home run by Dimensions Somerset. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults and older people, and because people tend to live here for a long time we think of ourselves as part of a household rather than as providers of a placement.
The house belongs to the people who live in it. They decide how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list and what gets cooked, and the week is built around what they want to do rather than around our convenience. Where help is needed with personal care, health appointments, medication, money or getting about, it is given in the way the person has agreed and recorded so that every member of staff does it consistently.
Learning how each person communicates is a real part of the work here. Some people use speech, some use signs, symbols, objects or behaviour we have to come to understand, and taking the trouble to learn is what makes choice real rather than nominal. Families, advocates and other professionals are involved to the extent that the person wants.
We encourage life beyond the front door, with work, college, clubs, friendships and holidays, and we see our job as making that happen. We also offer respite stays. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.
