About Us
Riccall House is a residential care home near York. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for families who need a planned break.
The household runs around the people in it. That means flexible mealtimes, personal bedtimes, and accepting that a quiet day is often the day somebody wanted.
Dementia care here rests on knowing people. We ask families for the history, the working life, the places and the music, because those are what still connect when much else has slipped. Without them we would be managing a condition rather than keeping company with a person, and residents notice the difference even when they cannot name it.
Respite guests are properly looked after rather than merely accommodated. We find out beforehand how somebody likes things done.
If a resident cannot easily speak up for themselves, we make sure somebody does on their behalf, whether a relative or an independent advocate.
We work hard at keeping the same staff on the same shifts, because familiarity does more for people here than almost anything else we could arrange.
Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather be plain about our limits than promise more than we can do.
