About Us
We are United Response at Woodland Way in Mitcham, a residential care home in the London Borough of Merton supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We provide accommodation and personal care, and we also offer respite stays.
Our starting point is the person's own life rather than a service plan. We spend time learning how somebody communicates, what they want their week to contain, what they can do for themselves and where they would like support, and we write that down in a form they can use. Support is agreed with the person, and with family or an advocate where they want them involved, and it is reviewed when things change rather than at whatever interval suits the paperwork.
We try hard not to take over. Where a person can do something themselves, our job is to make that possible, even when doing it for them would be faster. Keeping the week predictable matters too, because uncertainty is more often the cause of distress than the events themselves.
We also support people to keep their own connections going, whether that is family, friends, work, college or things they enjoy locally. A home should be a base, not the whole of somebody's world.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Respite Care
A short break at United Response gives the person a change of scene and gives a regular carer time to rest, recover or go away. It can also work as a low pressure trial before any decision about a permanent move. Enquire early, as respite rooms in Merton are often booked well in advance.
