About Us
Wharfeside is a residential care home in Otley. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we support younger adults too. We also offer respite stays for families needing a planned break.
We try to run this as a household rather than a facility, and the test of that lies in ordinary things. Whether staff knock and wait. Whether you can get a cup of tea late in the evening. Whether the person helping you knows what you did for a living. Whether anybody notices when you have been quieter than usual.
Being in a small market town has real advantages. Residents who have lived here for decades know the place far better than we do, and there is a good deal to be said for a conversation about the town with somebody who has watched it change over a lifetime.
For residents living with dementia we protect routine and keep surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the history that lets us understand what somebody means rather than only what they said.
The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. We would rather say so openly. Anyone considering us should come without an appointment and ask us whatever they want.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?
Yes. Wharfeside is registered for dementia care, so someone whose needs increase can usually stay rather than move. Ask how they support people in the later stages. Source: CQC register

Will they support end of life care, so there is no move at the hardest time?
Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.
Can she bring her cat or dog?
Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.
Can a couple stay together?
Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.
Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?
Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.
Do they take younger adults as well as older people?
Yes. Wharfeside supports younger adults as well as older people. Source: CQC register
Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?
Ask the home. Every home should welcome a visit. Call to arrange one, ideally at a mealtime or during an activity, and ask about visiting hours for family.
