About Us
The Denby at Denby Dale is a residential care home near Huddersfield, supporting older people and younger adults from across Kirklees, including many people living with dementia.
We think of ourselves as part of the village rather than a building set apart from it. People who move in have usually lived locally for years, and keeping those threads intact matters more than most brochures admit: the same newspaper, the same chapel, visitors who can walk round rather than make an expedition of it.
Day to day the work is practical. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here and served at a table. Warm rooms that look like they belong to the person in them. Staff awake at night. Beyond that we try to leave as much as possible in people's own hands, because choosing when to get up, what to wear and how to spend an afternoon is not a small matter when a great deal else has been taken away.
Dementia runs through much of what we do. Familiarity and calm work; correction does not. Arguing with somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody at all. Relatives usually hold the detail that unlocks a difficult hour, and we ask for it at the start.
The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. The most useful thing you can do is turn up, have a cup of tea and talk to the people who live here.

More about the care at The Denby at Denby Dale
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Denby Pharmacy and the village station are both 0.2 miles from The Denby. Registered for older person care, the home describes personal care given calmly and in private, medication managed properly, and meals cooked there and served at a table. Staff are said to be awake at night, in warm rooms meant to look like the resident's own. Beyond that it says it leaves as much as possible in people's own hands. Ask how many of those night staff there are across 47 places. Ask whether choosing when to get up and what to wear genuinely stays with the resident.
Dementia
Barnsley Hospital is 6.6 miles away in a straight line, a longer trip than the Huddersfield address suggests. Dementia runs through much of what this home does, by its own account, and it states that familiarity and calm work while correction does not. Arguing with somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody at all, it says. Relatives are described as usually holding the detail that unlocks a difficult hour. Ask how that history is gathered and passed between shifts. Ask how distress is handled, whether any area is secured, and what happens as dementia advances.
Younger Adults
Fifty eight of the 86 homes in Kirklees hold a Good or Outstanding rating, which this one has yet to be measured against. Younger adults are on its registration, though in 47 places most residents will be older. Someone under 65 usually wants different hours, company and activity. Ask who of that age lives there and what fills their week.
Residential Care
Forty seven places put The Denby above 67 of the 86 homes in Kirklees, where the average is 37. Residential care means everyday living support without nursing on site, so meals, personal care, medication and company come from care staff. The GP and community nursing team handle clinical needs, which separates it from a nursing home. The kitchen holds the top food hygiene rating of 5 out of 5, shared by 63 of the 80 local homes that have one. Fees across Yorkshire and Humberside commonly run from £800 to £1050 a week, while Kirklees usually pays about £650 to £800. Nothing has been inspected since the registration in May 2026, so ask who would cover any funding shortfall.
