About Us

Southlees is a residential care home in Huddersfield, and we are glad to be part of the wider Kirklees community. We support adults who need help with daily living in a house that feels like a home rather than an institution, where people keep their own routines, interests and friendships instead of fitting around someone else's timetable.

Much of our work is with adults who have a learning disability or who are autistic. We take time to learn how each person communicates, what makes a good day for them and what they would like to work towards, whether that is preparing their own meals, getting out into Huddersfield more often, or simply having calm and predictable surroundings. Support plans are written with the person and with the people who know them best, and we revisit them as things change.

We also offer respite care, which gives families a planned break while their relative stays somewhere welcoming and familiar. People who come to us for a short stay often return, and some later decide to make Southlees their permanent home.

Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are pleased with that, although we treat it as a starting point rather than a finish line, and we keep asking the people who live here and their relatives what could be better.

If you are weighing up care options for yourself or for someone close to you, you are very welcome to come and look round, meet the team and get a feel for the place. We are happy to answer questions, however small they seem.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?

No. Southlees is not listed for dementia care on the CQC register. If dementia is likely, choose a home that is, so a second move is not needed later. Source: CQC register

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.

Do they take younger adults as well as older people?

Ask the home. The register does not say which age groups the home supports. Ask the home.

Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?

Ask the home. Every home should welcome a visit. Call to arrange one, ideally at a mealtime or during an activity, and ask about visiting hours for family.
