About Carlton Autistic Care Centre

Carlton Autistic Care Centre is a residential care home in Huddersfield, Kirklees, supporting autistic adults and adults with a learning disability, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays for people who need a place for a shorter period. Everything here is built around the fact that autistic people experience the world differently rather than wrongly. That means we pay close attention to the things other settings treat as background. How bright a room is and how much noise it holds. Whether a change of staff or plan has been flagged days in advance rather than sprung on somebody. Which form of communication genuinely reaches a person, whether that is speech, symbols, writing or simply unhurried time. How much warning somebody needs before anything moves. Within that, people live their own lives. They choose how their rooms look, take part in shopping, cooking and running the house as much as they want to, and get out to what they actually enjoy. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a regular club, we build the support around making it realistic. We keep the staff team as consistent as we can, because familiarity does more good here than any technique, and we train people to recognise the early signs of distress and prevent it rather than respond after the fact. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. We work closely with families, social workers and health colleagues, and visitors are welcome.
