About Us

Laburnum House is a residential care home in Folkestone. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism, and we offer planned respite stays as well as longer term places.

We are not a large institution and we do not try to behave like one. People here have their own rooms, their own routines and their own opinions about how things should be done, and we would rather adjust around that than ask everyone to fit a single pattern. Our support covers the practical things, from personal care and medicines to meals, laundry and getting out into Folkestone, but a good deal of what makes a home work is less easily listed: knowing who likes company and who wants quiet, noticing when somebody is not themselves, and having staff who stay long enough to know the difference.

For adults with learning disabilities and autism, we pay attention to how someone communicates and what makes a day feel manageable. Predictability, warning about changes and being genuinely listened to make far more difference than any activity programme.

Respite stays are worth mentioning on their own. They give family carers a proper rest and they let people get a feel for us before making any longer decision.

Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on the answers.
