About Us
The Firs, part of Desborough Care, is a residential care home in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. We support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Most of the people who live here are younger adults.
A home for younger adults has to be about building a life rather than winding one down. People here have decades ahead of them, so we talk about work and college, money, cooking, travel, relationships and independence, and we expect people to take on more over time rather than less.
Support is agreed with the person and shaped around them. Some need help with personal care and health needs. Others mainly want somebody alongside them so that a demanding world becomes manageable. For autistic residents in particular, predictable routine, clear information, honest notice of change and attention to sensory demands prevent far more distress than any response afterwards.
Sight and hearing loss get the same practical attention, beginning with how we communicate, because somebody who cannot follow what is happening will withdraw.
Respite stays are available and can be a sensible way of finding out whether we suit somebody.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch to arrange a visit.
