About Us

We are a residential home in Chorleywood supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people.

The house runs as a household rather than an institution. People living here have their own rooms and their own belongings, and they take part in deciding how the place works: what is cooked, when meals happen, what gets bought and where everyone goes at the weekend. For adults who have often had very little say in daily life, that ordinary degree of control is much of the point of the place.

Support is built around each person and what they want to be able to do, whether that is work, college, volunteering, getting out regularly, keeping up with family, managing money with a hand from staff or learning to do more in the kitchen. Predictability counts for a great deal here, particularly for autistic people, so we keep staffing as consistent as we can and try not to change arrangements without warning and explanation. Respite stays are available alongside longer places.

Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We prefer to say so plainly rather than leave you to discover it elsewhere. We are working through the matters the inspectors raised and are willing to go through the report with anyone considering the home.

Please come and visit. Meeting the people who live here will tell you more than anything we can write.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?

No. Thorpedale is not listed for dementia care on the CQC register. If dementia is likely, choose a home that is, so a second move is not needed later. Source: CQC register

Is there a nurse on site if health needs change?

Will they support end of life care, so there is no move at the hardest time?

Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.

Can she bring her cat or dog?

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

Can a couple stay together?

Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.

Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?

Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.

Do they take younger adults as well as older people?

Ask the home. The register does not say which age groups the home supports. Ask the home.

Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?

Ask the home. Every home should welcome a visit. Call to arrange one, ideally at a mealtime or during an activity, and ask about visiting hours for family.
