About Baytrees
We are Baytrees, a residential care home in Basingstoke, Hampshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We offer permanent places and respite stays. A small home allows support to be genuinely individual rather than a compromise between too many competing needs, and that is the main reason we work the way we do. Staff know everyone here properly, including the things that never make it into a care plan. We take autism seriously as something that shapes how a person experiences a place, not as a diagnosis written at the top of a file. Predictability matters. The sensory environment matters. Being told what is happening and when, and having that turn out to be true, matters enormously. We try to get those right first, because when they are wrong nothing else works. People here are supported to make their own choices and to do things for themselves wherever they can, with help offered rather than imposed. Respite stays follow the same approach, with a proper introduction beforehand so that arriving is not a shock. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

What the inspectors found
A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Baytrees. Report published 31 August 2018.
- 2 July 2018, unannounced
- 4 places, 4 people were using the service at the time
Safe
Inspectors found that risks linked to people's anxiety and behaviour were assessed, monitored and reduced. Staff used a range of ways to calm difficult situations without physical intervention. There were enough suitably skilled staff, and the home was clean with systems to prevent infections spreading.
Effective
Inspectors found that staff had received training and support to help them do their jobs well. People were supported to have their health checked regularly and were given a diet that suited their needs. The provider also took part in an NHS England led initiative to help make sure people were not overmedicated.
Caring
Inspectors found that staff knew people's needs well and were patient in their approach. People were treated with dignity and respect. Staff clearly understood when people liked their privacy.
Responsive
Inspectors found that people's communication needs were fully assessed and staff used personal strategies to meet them. This meant people had choice and some control over their daily routines and activities. Preferred personal care routines were written in care plans, which people and their relatives helped to develop.
Well-led
Inspectors found that the registered manager had a sound understanding of people's needs and often worked alongside staff. The manager carried out audits and quality checks to monitor quality and safety. There were systems to gather feedback and deal with complaints.
What people told the inspectors
Relatives told inspectors that the registered manager was friendly and approachable. They said the manager kept them updated about their family members' health and wellbeing. Families also said they were confident the manager would handle concerns appropriately.
