About Fern Croft
Fern Croft in Gloucester is a residential home supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, alongside older people, and we also care for people with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are part of what we do. People generally live here for years, so we treat the house as their home and ourselves as part of the household. The people who live here have a say in how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list and what gets cooked, and the week is shaped around what they want to do rather than around our convenience. Practical support covers personal care, medication, health appointments, money and getting about, and it is given exactly as each person has agreed. We write those details down carefully, because for many people here consistency is what makes life feel safe, and a colleague new to a shift should be able to get somebody's morning right without being told. Communication is at the centre of the work. Not everybody uses speech, and where there is sensory loss as well we have to think hard about how information reaches a person and how we make ourselves understood. Learning each person's way is part of the job, not an extra, and we record what we learn so it is not lost when staff change. We encourage life beyond the front door. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.
