About Us
The Old Vicarage is a residential care home in Cottingham. We support adults who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we welcome younger adults as well. We take respite bookings for families needing a short break or a period of extra support.
We try to run the place the way a household runs rather than the way an institution does. People get up when they wake, eat what they actually like, keep their own furniture and photographs about them and carry on with the habits that make them feel themselves. Relatives are welcome without appointment, and we would far rather people dropped in than waited for a visiting slot.
Supporting somebody living with dementia asks for patience and a good memory for detail. Our staff learn the small things: the favoured chair, the songs that settle somebody, the hours of the day that are harder, the stories worth hearing again. None of that appears in a care plan, but it is what makes a home work.
Where sight or hearing has become restricted, small practical adjustments make a real difference and we treat those as part of the job.
Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.
