About Friary House

Friary House provides residential care in Weymouth for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. We also take planned respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution, and most of what we do is ordinary. Helping people wash and dress, seeing that medicines are taken properly, cooking meals people actually want to eat, keeping an eye on health, and making sure nobody spends the day waiting for somebody to speak to them. Residents get up when they choose, spend their time as they wish, keep their own things around them and have visitors whenever it suits. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work. The same faces, a recognisable shape to the day, and time to do things at the pace somebody can manage. We work with what a person can still do rather than treating the diagnosis as the whole story, and we pay attention to the signs that tell us somebody is uncomfortable or in pain when they can no longer say so directly. A calm unhurried approach prevents far more distress than it ever costs in time. Respite stays are genuinely useful. A planned stay gives a family carer proper rest, and it lets somebody find out what we are like without committing to anything longer.
