About 19 Lower Dolcliffe Road

19 Lower Dolcliffe Road is a small residential home in Mexborough. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults and people with sight or hearing loss, and we offer respite stays. Being small is the whole point. This is a house, not a unit, and it is run with the people who live in it rather than around them. Meals, shopping, laundry, what goes on the walls and how the household works are all things people take part in deciding. We plan support around what each person wants from their life rather than around a timetable that suits us. That might be help with cooking and managing money, support to keep a college place or a job, assistance to travel independently, or somebody alongside on a hard day. For autistic people we pay close attention to sensory needs and we flag changes well in advance, because unexpected change is usually the most difficult part. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's. Speech, signing, pictures, objects, or the particular way somebody shows they have had enough. Where sight or hearing is affected we think about lighting, contrast, sound and how we announce ourselves. Respite guests are welcome to visit beforehand and stay briefly before committing to longer. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to come and look round.

What the inspectors found

A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of 19 Lower Dolcliffe Road. Report published 4 August 2021.

  • 17 June 2021, during a routine inspection
  • 1 places, 1 person was using the service at the time
  • First assessment of the service

Safe

Staff were trained in keeping people safe from harm or abuse. The provider had mostly taken appropriate action when incidents or suspected abuse occurred. Staff were recruited safely. Medicines were well managed, with one area for improvement about "as required" medicines, which the registered manager confirmed had been addressed.

Effective

The person using the service was encouraged to be involved in meal planning and preparation, and their nutrition and hydration needs were assessed and monitored. Staff received training in a wide range of relevant areas. The person was supported to have choice and control in the least restrictive way possible.

Caring

Staff routinely promoted choice and independence. They spoke to the person using the service respectfully and upheld their dignity.

Responsive

Care plans were highly personalised, which showed staff understood the person's needs. Care was reviewed regularly and changes were made where needed. There was a complaints process, but the provider had not followed its own procedures when dealing with complaints, and CQC made a recommendation to assess how well the arrangements worked.

Well-led

There was a system for monitoring the quality of the service and making ongoing improvements. The service showed how it was meeting the principles of Right support, right care, right culture. Staff were dedicated to providing a person centred service that reflected the person's preferences.
