About Somerforde
Somerforde is a residential care home in Newton Abbot, Devon. We look after older people who need help with daily life but not nursing care, including people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Where somebody has a physical disability the work is often about equipment, patience and time. Giving a person the chance to do a thing themselves, slowly, rather than doing it for them because it is quicker. Moving someone comfortably rather than merely safely. Getting a wheelchair out into the garden on a decent afternoon instead of agreeing it is too much bother. The rest is the ordinary business of the day. Washing and dressing in a way that leaves somebody feeling like themselves, medicines on time, meals that are hot and worth eating, and company for people who had been spending far too much time alone before they came. Newton Abbot is a Devon market town and most of our residents are from here or nearby, so staff tend to be local and tend to stay. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Call in and see us, with or without warning, and watch how staff speak to the people who live here.
