About Dene Court Care Home

Dene Court is a residential care home in Exeter, and we are home to people who live here for the long term as well as to those who come for a short stay while a family carer takes a break. We try to run the place as a household rather than an institution, which sounds like a small distinction and turns out to be the whole thing. We support older people, including many living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, those with physical disabilities and residents with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays matter to us as much as permanent ones. Somebody arriving for a fortnight deserves to be properly known in that fortnight, not treated as a visitor passing through. Days here are not heavily programmed. Some residents want company, the newspaper read aloud, a hand of cards, a walk in the garden when Devon weather allows it. Others want their own room, their own radio and to be left in peace, and that is an equally good day. We pay attention to which is which, and we notice when it changes. Families are welcome without appointment. We would far rather people came in freely and saw us on an ordinary afternoon than met a version of us arranged for a visit. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall, and we hold onto that by looking at the details that make up a day.
