About Us
Little Acre Care Home is a residential care home in Wigton in Cumberland. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for those needing care for a short spell.
Being a smaller home in a small town is the point rather than a limitation. Everybody knows everybody, there is nowhere for a person to get lost in a system, and the community keeps coming through the door because people living here have often known this part of Cumberland all their lives. Visitors are welcome at whatever hour works for them rather than whatever suits our rota.
Coming to live in a care home is a considerable step, and the early weeks count for more than any account of the building. We use them to learn about the person: what they did for a living, what they will not be persuaded to eat, what time breakfast has always been, whether they would rather have company or the door shut and the radio on.
Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid surprising people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we look for the cause rather than simply trying to settle them.
At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking residents and relatives what needs to change.
