About Us
Portland Avenue is a residential care home in Seaham, County Durham, supporting autistic adults and adults with learning disabilities.
Supporting autistic people well means taking seriously the things that are easy to dismiss. A predictable day. Warning before something changes. A room that is not too loud or too bright. Being allowed to do something the same way every time because that is what makes it manageable. We build the house around those needs rather than asking people to tolerate an environment that does not suit them.
Beyond that this is a home like any other. People arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and decide how their days are spent. We support people to get out to work, to college, to clubs and to see family.
Communication gets particular attention, and we use whatever suits the individual, whether speech, signing, symbols, writing or objects of reference. Without that, choice is a word rather than a fact.
Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places.
Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to visit.
