About Us
Elliott House is a residential care home in Peterlee, County Durham, and we support adults with learning disabilities, autistic people and adults living with mental ill health. Respite stays are available as well.
We run a household rather than a unit. People here have their own rooms and their own belongings, and a real say over how the day goes. The staff team is kept consistent, because support from people who know you well is quite different from support from whoever happens to be on shift. Changes are explained in advance, the shape of the week holds, and we take sensory comfort seriously, since noise, light and busyness often decide whether a day goes smoothly.
Support covers personal care, medication, meals, money and the practical business of running a home, and wherever we can we do things alongside people rather than for them. Independence is much easier to keep than to recover, so if somebody can manage a task with a prompt, we prompt rather than take over.
For residents living with mental ill health, what we mostly offer is steadiness: a settled home, a team who do not judge, and a house that holds together when somebody has a difficult stretch.
We are also interested in what people want beyond these walls. Work, college, hobbies, friendships and family all matter.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit and ask us whatever they need to know.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?
No. Elliott House is not listed for dementia care on the CQC register. If dementia is likely, choose a home that is, so a second move is not needed later. Source: CQC register
Is there a nurse on site if health needs change?

Will they support end of life care, so there is no move at the hardest time?
Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.
Can she bring her cat or dog?
Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.
Can a couple stay together?
Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.
Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?
Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.
Do they take younger adults as well as older people?
Ask the home. The register does not say which age groups the home supports. Ask the home.
Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?
Ask the home. Every home should welcome a visit. Call to arrange one, ideally at a mealtime or during an activity, and ask about visiting hours for family.
