About Hawthorn House

Hawthorn House is a small residential home in Durham supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We also offer respite stays, which we plan properly in advance so that a short stay means arriving somewhere familiar rather than somewhere strange. This is the residents' home and we try hard to run it that way. People choose how their rooms look, have a genuine say in the meals and the shopping, and join in with cooking, gardening and running the house as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and money, and it covers helping somebody get out to whatever matters to them, from a job or a college course to a club, a church or a regular visit to family. Where we put most of our effort is understanding each person properly. Some people here use speech, some use signs, symbols or a device, and some tell us what they need through their behaviour. We learn it, record it so that it survives a change of shift, and take advice from families and from health colleagues who have known somebody far longer than we have. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We would still rather you came and formed your own view, so please arrange to visit.
